Handmade Jewellery cleverly created from discarded china and porcelain.
The interest in this young Swedish designer's work at London Fashion Week's Esthetica exhibition in September 2010 was tremendous. After London Elin substantially added to her growing list of clients. You can now find Sägen's jewellery as far away as Isetan in Japan. Sägen has rapidly generated a loyal following among shoppers worldwide and now continues to expand abroad.
Sägen is sold in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Iceland, Phillippines, Jamaica, UK, US and Japan. Sägen has agents in the UK and the US.
Elin was inspired to use old porcelain because of the nostalgic, emotional link they form with the remembered warmth of shared family meals. "They remind me of Sunday dinners at my grandmother's house." With the ongoing fragmentation of the traditional family and communal meals becoming a rarity for many, this link to a bygone time is certainly current.
The idea of transforming old porcelain into jewellery came to Elin in the summer of 2006 when she was on vacation at Gotland; an island in the Baltic sea where Elin spent her first 18 years. Elin's father has a garage full of machines and she has been there playing ever since she was a child. During the day she'd learned how to grind stones. In the evening a pile of porcelain, newly found at some local fleemarket, was left next to a grinding machine and one thing led to another. Today Sägen is a rapidly growing young label started in 2007.
The name Sägens means an old saga and suits Elins philosophy to make handmade, nostalgic and yet timeless jewellery that lasts forever.
